What Is Diabetes: Explaining diabetes and some tips on prevention

The CDC defines diabetes as “a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy”. When you have diabetes, your body can no longer properly utilize the insulin it produces, so you have to provide it with insulin manually, typically in the form of daily injection.

There are three types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational. Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by an autoimmune disorder. It can be found in people of any age, and symptoms have been known to develop quickly. Type 2 diabetes is the most commonly seen, and it is most often found in adults over the age of 45. Sometimes the syptoms can be evident, and sometimes the person won’t experience many symptoms at all in the beginning stages. This is why it is important to get your blood tested regularly if you feel you may be at risk. Finally, gestational diabetes develops in pregnant women, but goes away after their baby is born.

Diabetes is an extremely preventable disease. You chances of getting diabetes decrease significantly when you eat healthy and make sure to get adequate exercise.
