Healthy Kids Day

Healthy Kids Day is April 29, 2017!

On April 29, the Y will celebrate Healthy Kids Day, our national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids. Join us!
School's almost out and it's time to relax, decompress and have fun with friends. Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow. But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. In fact, research shows that kids are prone to gain more weight and fall behind in studies. So visit us to find out about opportunities for your youngsters this summer. Come see what it means to join the Y, Y camp, Y swim, and Y sports this summer. April 29th will be a fun filled day so be sure to come by to have fun and open the door to good health! Healthy Kids Day will also feature an open house for the Camp Yomeca summer day camp, from 10am to 2pm.

Healthy Kids Day 2016 kicks off a summer of learning and fun.

Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow. But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. Healthy Kids Day is a national YMCA initiative which helps kids get a head start on doing summer right, learning and staying active in a fun way.

This year, the Raritan Valley YMCA in East Brunswick celebrated an entire Healthy Kids Week. In addition to Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 30th, community members and kids joined the YMCA staff for a nature walk on Wednesday, April 27th. The walk taught kids to do what summer is all about: experience the outdoors in a mentally stimulating and physically active way. It also encouraged community leaders to consider changes which will improve health among residents.

The following Saturday, it was a carnival atmosphere at the Y with an entirely free Healthy Kids Day event. More than 100 children from East Brunswick and surrounding communities attended and participated in healthy-themed carnival games, arts & crafts, campfire stories, music, a gaga game, sports lessons in archery, tennis, and basketball, and other activities.

The event will be a jumping-off point for the Raritan Valley Y to continue serving community youth all spring and summer with programs that will help them develop mentally and physically: summer camp, swim lessons, youth sports, and more.

Healthy Kids Day 2015

On Saturday, April 26th, 2014, Raritan Valley YMCA introduced kids and teenagers to obstacle course racing with a “mini mud run.”

On April 26th, YMCAs all over the nation celebrated Healthy Kids Day, dedicated to promoting exercise and healthy living for kids all over the nation. While all Ys promote healthy kids, Raritan Valley YMCA may have had this year’s dirtiest kids.

The main event for this year’s celebration at RVY was the “Mini Mud Run,” a kid-sized version of an obstacle-course race. Obstacles included an army crawl through the mud, running through tires, a spider web of tangled ropes, a fitness gauntlet, and an underground tunnel of mud.

Once the race ended, many of the participants, age 7 to 16, decided that they weren’t dirty enough. Many kids decided to go through the course a second time, crawling back through the mud with an even bigger smile than they had the first time. The YMCA employees were also ready to prove that life’s best days leave you covered in mud. After the kids were done, an impromptu competition developed between race organizer Caleb Hunt and YMCA Executive Director Gina Stravic, to see who could complete the tunnel obstacle fastest. Stravic won easily, as the larger Hunt struggled to fit through the kid-sized underground tunnel.

Parents and kids looking for a full summer of active and fun activities should find out more information about Camp Yomeca, the YMCA’s summer camp program.
